They were real upfront with us about our succession plan. Don and Joe just talked about what happens next in succession and strategic planning, and in order for Dad (me) to get out, I would have to take on less responsibility. My two sons were going to have to belly up to the bar and get more involved, and that’s pretty much what we’ve done.

Committed to the region’s economic vitality, Don has become a leading authority on strategic planning, succession planning and organizational effectiveness. He is often called upon by economic development agencies throughout the state of Pennsylvania. After working with many businesses on an “emergency room” basis, Don realized that with a structured succession plan developed three to five years ahead of time, a company can emerge better prepared to continue into the future after the retirement of the current owner. He has also transferred this knowledge and methodology to the nonprofit area in assisting to secure the executive director to carry on the organizations’ successful mission.
This unique strategic and succession planning processes bring people together to brainstorm, envision and prioritize building the consensus they need to achieve great results. One business leader said that Don’s involvement in their business “certainly righted the ship” when they strategized, and then followed their plan two years ahead of schedule! He helps to establish the framework so that each company or organization can make better decisions on their own.
Don worked in manufacturing management for 13 years before launching Decision Associates in 1984. He holds dual degrees in economics and accounting from Edinboro University.
He has devoted his time and professional services to many organizations including the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership, Erie Community Foundation and North East Community Foundation, United Way and his church. He was previously involved in Mercyhurst North East Dean’s Council and Adopt a Student program, Boy Scouts of American, North East Little League and Soccer Associations, and served as an elected North East School Board member.
